Correctional Nurse Basics: The Nervous System
3.0 Continuing Education Hours
The nervous system is a complex and intricate network that plays a crucial role in controlling and coordinating various functions of the human body. From simple reflexes to complex thoughts, the nervous system controls our physiological processes.
Part of our Basics series, this class will discuss the structure and function of the nervous system, including the two main components: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). We will review the function of neurons and understand how they communicate to transmit signals across the body. We will discuss the functions of the brain and spinal cord, and neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and change, and discuss how external factors like learning and experience shape our neural connections. We will review key patient education points for the maintenance of the nervous system. Finally, we will discuss five conditions associated with the nervous system – Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Dementia, Multiple Sclerosis and Stroke.
